Moving from one property to another can be exciting if you are on your way to a better home. You are thrilled to go to your new apartment or house, decorate it, design it and start living the next chapter of your life.

However, with moving all of your belongings comes challenging times. It is not always as fun as it sounds. You have to think about so many things – how to properly pack everything, what boxes to use, how to secure them so that nothing breaks, and how even to start the whole procedure! Then comes the logistics – how to transport everything, how to unload it, move it, and disassemble it. With so many things to think about, it is natural that you forget something or don’t think about an easier way to do it. So, our experts and we are going to share with you some important tips for your moving day. Let’s make it easy!

For sure, you probably have old boxes that you think you can use for packing. But still, you are going to need a lot more than that unless, of course, you work in a shop where boxes come and go daily. Make sure you are prepared with small, medium, and large boxes so that you can fit everything when the day comes. Except for those boxes, you will also need special boxes for mirrors. Additionally, what you need to get is the following:

  • Bubble wrap
  • Tape
  • Styrofoam
  • Stretch wrap
  • Markers and labels
  • Plastic bags

The stretch wrap is for furniture – make sure you wrap them all well enough so that when you transport them, they won’t damage. The markers and labels will help you organise everything better – you will know what boxes are heavier, what boxes may contain breakables, etc. And the tape will help you secure those boxes well enough.

Of course, if all that seems too much for you, there is always the option of hiring a professional packing company that will do everything for you!

Organise your time and process for the proper moving process

Start packing in advance

It’s good to know that time management will be crucial for your moving days. There will be a lot of tasks for you ahead, so the sooner you start organising everything, the better. That’s why we advise you to start ahead with packing or, at least, organising where everything will go – what items you won’t be keeping, thus will need clearance, what items you’ll need help with to transport (heavy and breakable ones most likely), etc. Don’t wait until the last minute to take care of everything because the chances of you missing out on something will be high. Start a month ahead, and pack the small items that you won’t be using for that period of time. Go over the small rooms and with the seasonal items (like garden tools, summer clothes or coats and winter clothes, seasonal shoes, Christmas decorations or else). Sorting your belongings will make it easier for you to set aside the first boxes ready for transport. The same goes for items you won’t be taking with you to the new location, so you can give away, donate them, or move them to trash.

Make a list

Making an inventory list will help you later when you have to label all of the boxes. You’ll have boxes of clothes, ones of CDs and books, silverware, kitchen items, bathroom supplies, etc. Having a list will help you know in detail what boxes contain particular items so that when you have to unpack them, you’ll know how to organise the task in every single room.

Additionally, start packing one room at a time, and later, when unpacking, do the same. The truth is, unpacking is just as important as packing and can even take more time to do so. That’s why our advice is to start room by room and have categories for your belongings and furniture. Even if organisational skills are not your strongest, do your best and stay on top of your game.

Pack smart

It’s also very important to pack all items cleverly, so that there are no surprises when you unload them at the new location. This includes rolling your clothes so that they take up less space and using plastic bags for spillable items (or using zipper bags for those). Also, use roll tubes for cables and appliances. All wiring will be better packed, and you can avoid tangled cables if you use roll tubes to pack them separately. Don’t forget to label them afterwards because it is easy to get confused about what cable for what is used.

Sort correctly

In addition to packing smart, make sure you also sort everything the right way. First, when you fill your boxes, see if there are some gaps inside, and fill them with clothes or other soft items that you have. Then, when sorting out your boxes, always put the heavy ones at the bottom because otherwise, you compromise the heavy boxes damaging the lighter ones if they are below them.
